Abstract
694,702. Photagraphic processing. GENERAL ANILINE & FILM CORPORATION. Nov. 19, 1951 [Dec. 6, 1950], No. 27091/51. Class 98 (ii). An alkaline glyoxal solution for hardening gelatino-silver halide layers, especially those of multilayer-colour former film which are to be subjected to high-temperature high-speed processing, contains a small proportion of a boron compound to prevent premature deterioration of the solution on standing. The solutions generally contain 0.04 to 2 per cent of glyoxal and 0.1 to 3 per cent of alkali metal carbonate or equivalent amount of hydrate; and may contain a water softener such as sodium hexametaphosphate, ethylenediamine-tetra-acetic acid and its alkali salts, sodium glucosate or the sodium salt of glucoheptonic acid to reduce sludge; an alkali metal sulphate to reduce swelling of the gelatine, an azole such as 2-mercapto - benzimidazole, phenylmercapto - tetrazole, 2 - mercaptobenzothiazole, benzotriazole or 6-nitrobenzimidazole if desired with a small quantity of formaldehyde to reduce stain and fogging; and 0.05 to 2 per cent of the boron compound which may be borax, sodium metaborate, sodium perborate, orthoboric acid, polyboric acids or organic derivatives such as benzyl or ethyl boric acids. Examples describe the hardening and reversal processing of a multilayer film of conventional type at 80 ‹ F. instead of the normally recommended temperature of 68‹ F., the total processing time being cut from 86 to under 20 minutes.
