Abstract
694,613. Floors; reinforced blockwork beams. RICHARD, G. N., and FLECHET, M. J. J. July 31, 1951 [Aug. 25, 1950; March 16, 1951; April 6, 1951; July 4, 1951; July 4, 1951], No. 18161/51. Class 20 (iv). In a floor construction which comprises reinforced blockwork beams laid side-byside or in spaced parallel relationship, the beams consist of hollow core units placed end-to-end so that channels formed longitudinally in the upper surface and through the lower part of each unit are aligned, the units also being formed with vertical recesses in their abutting end faces so that vertical channels are formed which connect the longitudinal channels together, the channels and recesses being filled with reinforced concrete which forms a runged girder within the beam. In the form shown, each hollow core unit is made in two parts, a lower part 13 having a top channel 16 and outwardly projecting longitudinal flanges 15 and an upper part 14 with a top channel 17, longitudinal shoulders 21 and end recesses 18 to form the joist, the lower parts 13 are aligned and a reinforcing bar 7 placed in channels 16, vertical straps 9 being supported from bar 7 above the joint between the parts 13. The upper parts 14 are placed on parts 13 and a bar 8 positioned in channels 17, the straps 9, which pass up through the co-operating recesses 18, being joined to bar 8. Concrete is filled into the channels and recesses, and, when set, forms a ladder-like girder which extends throughout the length of the beam. Fig. 5 shows two forms of floor incorporating beams made in this way. At the left side of the figure is shown a girder floor wherein the beams are arranged side-byside and reinforced concrete 23, 25 cast between and over them. At the right hand side is shown a floor wherein the joists are spaced apart, filler blocks 19 and 20 resting on the flanges 15 and shoulders 21 of the units and concrete 25 being cast over the whole to complete the floor.
