Abstract
693,675. Magnetic measurements. BERTHOLD, R. Oct. 11, 1951 [April 5, 1949], No. 23707/51. Class 37. In an instrument for measuring the thickness of non-ferromagnetic films on a ferromagnetic base by the pull of a permanent bar magnet suspended on a spring, the magnet is fitted with a pole shoe of highly permeable non-retentive material. A permanent magnet 1 is fitted with a pole shoe 2 and is employed for measuring the thickness of a non-ferromagnetic layer on a ferromagnetic base 3. The magnet hangs from a balance beam and is pulled away from the layer by a spiral spring wound about the pivotal axis of the beam. The spring is tensioned by winding up the end not attached to the beam, the amount of winding measuring the pull of the magnet. The pole shoes 2 may be spherically curved at the end, as shown in Fig. 1. Alternative forms of shoe are shown in Figs. 2 and 3. For measuring thick layers both ends of the magnet are fitted with pole shoes as shown in Fig. 4, the magnet system being pivoted so that the measurement is not affected by uneven withdrawal of the magnet from the base. By means of a locking rest the spring tensioning means may be held in the position it has reached when the magnet pulls away from the test-piece. The notches of this rest may be unevenly spaced to correspond with the non-linear dependence of pull on thickness of film. Readily interchangeable permanent magnets of different strength may be provided for different ranges of measurement.
