Abstract

<PICT:0693656/III/1> Stoppers or closures particularly for medicine bottles or ampoules for for intravenous injections are coated with a thin glace film of a silicone antifoam agent e.g. by dipping, spraying or brushing or by impregnating the material from which the stoppers are made e.g. rubber with the antifoam agent, which may be a dispersion or solution of the silicone compound. After dipping &c. the solvent is allowed to evaporate leaving a thin film 24 of the antifoam agent over the stopper 10. The rubber stopper shown is of the form adapted to be punctured by a hypodermic needle for withdrawing the medicament into a syringe, and has an interior hollow bore 20. When the bottle, ampoule &c. is shaken the antifoam agent is introduced into the medicament and the foam is suppressed. The film on the stoppers also acts as a lubricant and prevents them sticking together in clusters in the autoclave during sterilization. The film may be applied only upon those surfaces of the stopper which comes into contact with the liquid. The compound used is that known as "D.C. Antifoam A," and the solvents may be cyclohexane, ethyl ether, methylene chloride &c.
