Abstract

693,460. Cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 18, 1952 [Feb. 19, 1951], No. 4039/51. Drawings to Specification. Class 36. [Also in Groups XVIII and XXVIII] A metal-sheathed cable has a protective cover comprising a continuous layer of rubber sandwiched between two relatively thin helical lappings of moisture-impervious material of which the modulus of elasticity is high as compared with unvulcanized rubber. The covering is applied to the cable sheath in the form of two relatively staggered helical lappings of tapes, each tape comprising a layer of unvulcanized rubber and a carrier layer of moisture-impermeable material such as polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene. The lappings are applied so that the two rubber layers are in contact. The rubber is vulcanized after application of the tapes to the cable, and this may be effected by omitting an essential vulcanizing ingredient, e.g. an ultra-rapid accelerator, from the rubber layer of one tape, and another essential vulcanizing ingredient, e.g. sulphur, from the rubber layer of the other tape. When the two layers of rubber come into contact migration of these essential ingredients takes place, and with it vulcanization of the two layers, as described in Specification 691,618.
