Abstract
693,426. Photographic contact-printing and developing apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. April 19, 1949 [April 20, 1948], No. 10350/49. Class 98 (ii). [Also in Group XVI] In apparatus for feeding tapes 1 of limited elasticity, e.g. photographic films of regenerated cellulose having a thickness of the order of tens of microns, through a treatment apparatus 4, and comprising a feed-roller 6 and a draw-off roller 7 having substantially equal peripheral speeds, means are provided operated by the variation of a loop 13 in the tape to stretch the tape varying amounts by controlling the tension of the tape and thus maintain constant the length of tape between the rollers 6, 7. As shown in Fig. 1, a film 1 is fed under constant tension from a reel 5, between felt pads 15, 16 constituting the tension control-device, over the roller 6 in contact with a negative film 9 to be copied on the film 1 by exposure to a light source 11, and through a developing and drying- apparatus 4 to the draw-off roller 7. Between the roller 6 and the apparatus 4, a floating roller 14d engages a loop 13 in the film and is carried by a lever 14b supported by one spring 14c and connected by another spring 14c to a lever 14a carrying the upper pad 16. Variation of the loop length due to a slight difference in the peripheral speeds of the rollers 6, 7 or to variations in the film length caused by the treatment in the apparatus 4, alters the friction force at 15, 16 to restore the loop to its original length; thus the film length between the rollers 6, 7 is maintained constant, and the film after leaving the apparatus 4 is immediately ready for projection if required. The pads 15. 16 may act on the film between the rollers 6, 7, i.e. adjacent to the roller 7 or between two of the guide rollers 2 of the apparatus 4, in which case increase of loop length causes decrease of the friction force exerted by the pads 15, 16 and vice versa, in contrast to the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, where the reverse takes place. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the movements of the lever 14b may control the pressure of a leafspring on the periphery of one of the rollers 2, the roller being in the form of a hollow cylinder freely mounted on a driven spindle. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
