Abstract

A method of treating ferrous metal sheet or strip comprises working the metal at a temperature of 350-500 DEG F to stress its outer layers to the yield point and immediately quenching to at most 150 DEG F. The working may be effected by passing the metal over rollers with a diameter not greater than 500 times its thickness, and the metal may be further worked after quenching by passing over rollers of diameter not greater than 100 times its thickness before being roller levelled. The treatment is particularly applicable to strip after annealing or hot-dip coating.
