Abstract

693,389. Filling long flexible tubes. JOHNSON, W. T. Jan. 3, 1952 [Jan. 8, 1951], No. 558/51. Class 94(i). A machine for filling tubes made of flexible plastic with a mobile paste or liquid includes a long, rigid, hollow nozzle over which a long length of a tube to be filled may be slid as a sheath, and positive means for feeding into the nozzle and delivering from the end thereof into the plastic tube a succession of predetermined quantities of the paste or liquid, each quantity being such as to fill a portion of the tube which is small in relation to the initial length thereof, the arrangement being that in use the tube is progressively withdrawn from the nozzle as ,the end portion of the tube is filled. A long flexible tube 32 is slid as a sheath over a long, rigid filling nozzle 31, possibly 25 feet in length, and a ram piston 22 is reciprocated, through lost motion means 26, 27, so that, on its rearward stroke, mobile paste from one or other cylinder 12, where it is maintained under constant pressure, passes through a tube 18 and by a non-return ball-valve therein into a front part 20 of the ram cylinder; and on its forward stroke the ram pushes the volume of material in the front part of the ram cylinder through a non-return outlet valve 29 into the nozzle 31. The tube, as each quantity is delivered, is progressively withdrawn and sealed into packets, for example by a machine as described in Specifications 652,955, 652,956, 655,583, [Group V], and 663,373. The nozzle may be vertical instead of horizontal so that gravity assists flow.
