1497283 Metering fluent material; filling bottles H LAUB III 10 Dec 1974 53341/74 Headings B8N and B8T An apparatus for feeding a metered amount of flowable substance, e.g. a very thin or a very viscous fluid which readily foams, comprises a metering chamber 26, Fig. 2, with a bi-acting piston 27 which feeds the substance to a submersible nozzle 1d in a container 4 to be filled or partly filled. A suction device 800 removes drips from the nozzle 1d after dispensing. The supply to the metering chamber 26 is via a spool valve 14 whose position is controlled pneumatically or electrically by pneumatic or electrical sensors 29, 30 which are engaged by an extension 27f on the piston rod 27e. The piston is displaced upwards by the in-coming fluid to empty the upper chamber 11i and then the valve 14 changes over so that the piston is displaced downwards to empty the lower chamber 11j and complete the fill. The positions of the sensors are adjustable to alter the volume metered. A bubble removing chamber 41 is provided in the feed from the supply 42 to the metering chamber 26. The nozzle is moved downwards to engage in the container by a pneumatic cylinder 35 or by a cam 43, Fig. 3, when the nozzles are mounted on a turntable. Each nozzle has a supply pipe 1g to an adjustable head 1b with apertures 1k, lj &c. of which one is selected. A movable sleeve 2 defines a discharge path to a plug 1d with a bore 1e leading to a transverse bore 1f. In use, as the nozzle is moved downwards, the shoulder 3a engages the container neck to allow the sleeve 2 to advance beyond the outer housing 3 and further downward movement causes the plug 1d to advance beyond the sleeve to allow fluid supply to the container. After filling the nozzle is raised and drops removed along bores 1e, 1f by suction.
