Abstract
693,244. Anaesthetic apparatus. ROCHETTE, R. E. Feb. 6, 1951 [Feb. 18, 1950], No. 2942/51. Class 81 (ii). [Also in Group XXIX] A gas flow-controlling device in an anaesthetic apparatus comprises a casing of which two opposed ends consist of similar pressure-responsive diaphragms, a valve resiliently urged to the position closing off the inlet to the casing but opened by a cam fixed on a shaft which is journaled in the casing and carries an arm connected at its ends to the two diaphragms, and manually operated means for imparting a transverse displacement in the direction of the valve to both the shaft and the cam. Each diaphragm 10 is connected to a lever 12 pivoted at one end 13 to the valve casing and, at the other end, having a pin-and-slot connection with an arm 15 rotatable about its mid point on a shaft 9. A cam 19 carried by the shaft 9 will be similarly rotated and will act on the stems 21 of two inlet valves 18 to open the latter and allow gas to flow into the device through connectors 6. The valves are loaded to the closed position by springs 19, and the stems 21 are cut-away to allow the passage of gas. One end of shaft 9 is pivoted in the cranked end of a further shaft rotatable from outside the casing whereby shaft 9 can be moved laterally without rotation. Gas is supplied to the casing through a pressure reducing valve and the outlet leads to a breathing mask. The device may be used to mix gases.
