Abstract

692,779. Storing freshly-plucked tea leaf. BAKE, A. M. H. Nov. 9, 1950 [Dec. 6, 1949], No. 31329/49. Class 5(i) [Also in Groups VI and XVII] Freshly-plucked tea leaf is stored in closed containers which are preferably airtight. A vacuum may be maintained within the container; a gas having no effect on the leaf, e.g. carbon dioxide or nitrogen, and preservative substances such as acetic acid and sulphurous acid, may be introduced into the container. Substances which counteract anaerobic bacterial activity may be added to the leaf. The drum of Fig. 1 has an outer wall 1 in which is a perforated inner wall 4, and is closed in an airtight manner by two detachable covers 2 which have channels 5 leading from central apertures 6 having valve 7, for admission of gases or liquids to the drum or removal of air or moisture therefrom. Within the drum, the leaf is compressed between plates 8. In charging the drum, it is arranged vertically with the lower cover in place and the top cover removed, a plate 8 carrying a layer of leaf is pushed into the drum, whereupon a peripheral lip 9 of the plate engages the wall 4 and prevents upward movement of the plate, on the layer of leaf is placed a top plate 10 having tapered pegs 11 which penetrate the leaf, on this top plate is placed another filled plate 8 and another top plate 10 is anplied. and so on. until the drum is filled. The filled drums may be immersed in cold water; the leaf in the drums may be quick-frozen. The tea leaf is, immediately on being plucked. preferably carried in the device of Fig. 2, which comprises a light cylinder 12 having a flared mouth and a tightly-fitting removable bottom 13; the plucker places in the cylinder a quantity of freshly-gathered leaves pressed by hand to a ball, smooths out the ball to a layer, and pushes on to the layer a disc 14 having at its edge a rubber washer, which washer turns upwards against the wall of the cylinder, he later places in the cylinder a ball of the leaves next gathered and applies another disc 14, and so on; for removal of the leaf from the cylinder, the bottom 13 is detached, and the layers of leaf and the discs are pressed out. Specification 692,778, [Group VI], is referred to.
