Abstract
692,720. Pyrophoric lighters. MILLER, H. June 21, 1951 [July 5, 1950], No. 16796/50. Class 75(iii) In a pyrophoric lighter comprising a hollow sheet metal casing having a portion to receive an igniter unit and a portion to resiliently grip and releasably retain a fuel container unit therein ignition being effected by the opening movement of a pivoted cap piece through a ratchet drive of the friction wheel, the flint spring at its far end abuts against the casing unit and the igniter unit is slidable from an operative position to a position in which it projects from the casing spring-loaded means being provided to lock the unit in each position; the arrangement is thus such that the flint is not pressed by the spring against the friction wheel when the unit is in the projected position so that the flint can be replaced. A pressed sheet metal casing 1 formed with an open ended cylindrical portion 4 and a box-like portion 5 open at the top and closed at the bottom, resiliently grips a fuel container unit 2 in the portion 4 and carries an igniter unit 3 in the portion 5. The fuel container unit 2 has a lower casing 6 formed with an annular ridge 14 to hold the container within, and a number of ridges 14a to facilitate removal from, the portion 4. A wick 9 passes through a hole in a cap 12 fitted into the top of the casing 6 and into the container through a hole 8 in a U-shaped member 7 fitted into the casing 6. Cotton wool or the like is packed between the legs 11 of the member 7. The igniter unit 3 has a rectangular element 15 which fits into the portion 5. The cap piece 20 has lugs 23 formed thereon to abut tongues 24 formed on the igniter body when the cap is down and a tongue 21 to abut the upper end 22a of a flint tube 22 when the cap is down and a tongue 21 to to the up position and actuates the friction wheel 18 by a spring 30 bearing against the bottom 'of the casing 15 and acting on the lower end 28a of a connecting rod 28 attached to lugs 27 formed on the cap 20; the cap 20 is released by depressing the rear end thereof. The igniter unit.3 is either held in the operative or in the projected position in the portion 5 by a spring-loaded button. 35 entering one of the holes 37 formed in the wall of the portion 5. When the unit 3 is in the lowermost position the flint 32 is pressed against the wheel 18 by a spring 34 bearing against the wall 5b of portion 5. Upon depression of button 35 the unit 3 is moved upwards by a spring 33, compressed between the lower end 28a of the connection rod 28 and the wall 5b of the portion 5, and the spring 34 reaches the limit of its extension before the unit 3 reaches its uppermost position and therefore moves away from the flint 32 thus enabling a new flint to be inserted in the tube 22 through an aperture 31. A saddle 41 slidably mounted on the portion 4 enables slots 40 in the wind shield to be opened or closed.
