Abstract

Latex-like polymer dispersions are made, in the absence of emulsifiers, protective colloids and other surface-active agents, oils, plasticizers, solvents and other organic liquids, by agitating at 0 DEG to 100 DEG C. an aqueous medium containing only 100 parts of liquid monomeric material comprising vinyl chloride and/or vinylidene chloride, 400 to 600 parts of water, 0.1 to 1.0 part of a water-soluble persulphate, e.g. sodium, potassium and ammonium persulphates and an alkaline buffer salt, e.g. sodium carbonate, bicarbonate, acetate, tetraborate, pyrophosphate and silicate, ammonium carbonate, bicarbonate. The monomeric material may include methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl and octyl acrylates; methyl methacrylate, butyl ethacrylate; acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, a -chloroacrylonitrile; methacrylamide; styrene, p-chlorostyrene, 3,5-dichlorostyrene, p-methoxystyrene; vinyl bromide, fluoride, and iodide; vinylidene bromide and chlorofluoride; vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, benzoate; diethyl fumarate; vinyl methyl ketone; vinyl methyl ether; vinyl pyridine and vinyl carbazole. Figures are given for the tensile strength, modulus at 100 per cent elongation and elongation at break for polyvinyl chloride plasticized with di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate.
