Abstract
Vinyl chloride/di-(2-ethylhexyl) fumarate copolymers are produced by suspension polymerization of a mixture of 80-99 parts vinyl chloride and 20-1 parts di-(2-ethylhexyl) fumarate in an aqueous medium containing a N-vinyl pyrrolidone polymer as suspension stabilizer and using an oil-soluble polymerization initiator. 0.05-3.0 parts of the N-vinyl pyrrolidone polymer, e.g. homopolymer of K-value 30-90, may be used. The monomers may be suspended in 100-400 parts of water. The initiators may be a peroxide, e.g. caprylyl, benzoyl, lauryl or di-tert.-butyl, or may be 2-azo bis-isobutyronitrile and 0.05-1.0 parts may be used. Polymerization may be carried out at a pressure sufficient to maintain the vinyl chloride in the liquid phase, at 40-70 DEG C., and using a buffer, e.g. sodium bicarbonate. In a comparative example gelatin replaced the N-vinyl pyrrolidone polymer. The copolymer may be milled together with dibutyl tin di-nonyl thioglycollate and stearic acid, into a sheet.
