Abstract

Coating compositions comprise an aqueous dispersion of a vinylidene chloride copolymer, a small quantity of an acid sulphate of a normal aliphatic alcohol containing from 12 to 24 carbon atoms and preferably a minor amount of a colloidal dispersion of a substantially water-insoluble inorganic compound. The other component of the copolymer may be methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile or vinyl chloride and if desired a third component selected from citraconic acid, citraconic anhydride, itaconic acid, itaconic anhydride, mesaconic acid, acrylic acid or a mixture of anhydrides obtainable from citric acid by distillation and including citraconic anhydride and itaconic anhydride. Specified acid sulphates are n-octadecyl and n-hexadecyl. The inorganic compounds mentioned are silica, alumina, talc, kaolin, bentonite, magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate, and barium sulphate.
