Abstract

1,209,973. Sizing paper. BADISCHE ANILIN-& SODA-FABRIK A.G. 22 Feb., 1968 [23 Felb., 1967], No. 8609/68. Heading D2B. Paper containing Al<+++> or Fe<+++> ions is sized by impregnating its surface with a watersoluble salt of a copolymer based on (a) a vinyl alkyl ether or vinyl cyclohexyl ether or both and (b) maleic anhydride or a monoalkyl maleate or both. When monomer (b) is maleic anhydride, the copolymer is hydrolysed, or may be partly esterified or partly amidated. The salt may be a sodium, ammonium or substituted ammonum salt. The copolymer may contain also up to 20% of a third monomer (c), e.g. acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, their nitrites, amides, or alkyl esters, vinyl esters of alkylcarboxylic acids, vinyl chloride or styrene. The Al<+++> or Fe<+++> ions may be introduced as aluminium sulphate, aluminium acetate, basic aluminium chloride, basic aluminium acetate or ferric chloride. These may be added to the pulp, or finished paper may be treated with a solution of the salt before treatment with the copolymer. Other sizing agents, e.g. resin size, may also be present, as also may pigments, dyes, wet-strength improvers, and brighteners. Such materials specifically referred to in the Examples are kaolin, ureatormaldehyde resin and sodium aluminate. In two of the Examples, the copolymer solution contains also oxidized starch and soluble starch respectively.
