Abstract

692,149. Cutting apparatus. COLODENSE, Ltd. March 6, 1951. [March 9, 1950] No. 5964/50. Class 31 (i). A guillotine for cutting continuously-moving webs 33 of paper, cellulose film &c. has a straight line cutter 19 operated intermittently to cut the web without interfering with its travel. As applied to making bags, oppositely-opposed cutters 19, 20 are provided for cutting the upper and lower walls 34, 35, Fig. 4, of the web 33 which has been formed into a tube on a mandrel 30 and slotted at intervals along its side walls, removing portions, so that the cutters 19, 20 act to cut the web into sections. The cutters 19, 20, which enter slots 31, 32 in the mandrel 30 during the cutting operation, are carried by beams 17, 18, Fig. 2, connected to the ends of bell-crank levers 11, 12 that pivot on shafts 8. Arms 16 of these levers are coupled by springs, 14 to gears 5, 7 rotatable on the shafts 8 and driven by a gear 3. Latches 22, 23 mounted on pivots 24, 25 and geared together at 26 are urged by a spring 28 into the path of projections 21 on the ends of the levers 11, 12 which are halted thereby with the cutters close to the web. Since the gears 3, 5, 7 continue to rotate, the springs 14 are extended until a cam 29 carried by the gear 7 contacts the lever 11 so as to compress the spring 28 and disengage the levers 11, 12 which then cause the cutters 19, 20 to shear the web as the springs 14 contract. In their contracted position, the springs 14 hold the levers against stops 13 on the gears 5, 7. The Provisional Specification states also that the apparatus can be modified to cut single webs with one cutter only.
