Abstract

691,842. Couplings for conveying supersonic energy. ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES DE CHARLEROI. Sept. 11, 1951 [Sept. 14, 1950], No. 21364/51. Class 40 (iv). A feeler of the type described in Specification 613,239 (i.e. comprising a container for liquid having one end closed by a vibratile member and the opposite end closed by a flexible wall) is provided with means for decreasing the volume of the liquid container to apply pressure to the liquid confined therein and produce swelling of the flexible wall. As shown in Fig. 1, the container consists of two cylindrical portions 4 and 5 the former of which screws into the latter, the ends being closed by the vibratile member O and the flexible wall 3 respectively. The container is assembled under water and as the portion 4 is screwed into the portion 5 the volume of the container is decreased and the wall 3 is distended. The portion 4 is screwed almost home in the portion 5. Leakage of liquid occurs between the screw threads 7, 17 and when the wall 3 has assumed the required shape the portion 4 is screwed right home, gasket 18 then rendering the container liquid-tight. In a modification the portion 4 is a push fit into the portion 5 and is secured by a bayonet joint having several stop-points, thus enabling the container to have various volumes as desired.
