Abstract

691,780. Rotary meters. KENT, Ltd., G. Aug. 30, 1951 [Sept. 21, 1950], No. 23213/50. Class 110(ii). A liquid meter, comprising an outer casing 1 and an inner working chamber 5, is arranged so that the stream flows through in substantially an axial direction to drive a peripherally-bladed rotor 20, means between the inlet and the rotor causing the liquid area to contract into an annulus adjacent the rotor blades 21. The means may comprise a cone 7, and a further cone 8 may be provided between the rotor and the outlet. Liquid enters the meter through a port 2, is divided by a rib 4, passes through a strainer 6 and leaves through an outlet 3. The leading edge of one blade, the blades being at an angle to the rotor periphery, is preferably in line axially, with the trailing edge of the next blade Fig. 4 (not shown). Spring rings 12, 14, preferably of stainless steel, hold the cones in position. The rotor shaft 16 has jewelled end bearings 15, 17 and drives the usual recording mechanism 18 by means of a gear 19. The casing may be of brass, and the working chamber, rotor and cones of plastic material such as polystyrene. The bottom of the cone 7 may have vanes to give an initial whirl to the entering liquid and the cone may have vents to equalise pressures inside and out. A modification, Fig. 8, shows the inlet and outlet ports 2, 3 cone 7 and rotor 20 all in line, the shaft 16 being supported on jewelled bearings. The recording mechanism 18 is driven by a shaft 31 in a tube 33 which may be filled with oil.
