Abstract

691,562. Musical instruments. COOPER, F. T. Dec. 28, 1950. No. 31472/50. Class 88 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIX]. An electro-magnetic microphone which responds to mechanical vibrations and to sound (see Group XXXIX) is fitted to an accordion pianoforte or stringed instrument. As shown in Fig. 10, the microphone 35 may be suspended within an accordion by springs 32 and responds to air transmitted sound. Alternatively a vibration detecting contact 26 may engage the sound board of a piano, Fig. 11 (not shown), the rear of the microphone being cushioned by a rubber pad against a fixed support. In an application to stringed instruments such as guitars, mandolins, violins and violoncellos, the microphone is attached to the instrument, Fig. 9, by an adjustable clamp 30 with the contact piece 26 in engagement with the sound box. The clamp is provided with a rubber cushioning block 31. For violoncellos and basses, the microphone may be wedged under the bridge 40, Fig. 12, by rubber blocks 38.
