Abstract
1300246 Electrophonic musical instruments; pianos D H BALDWIN CO 24 Feb 1970 8894/70 Heading G5J A string termination or agraffe for an electropiano is designed to provide coupling between strings similar to that provided by the soundboard and bridge of a conventional piano and to permit use of a number of transducers smaller than the number of strings. The agraffe comprises a U-section aluminium rail E, Fig. 3, resiliently bolted to a string plate 10 by means of a bolt 33, grommet 32 and a layer of felt 30. The tuned portion of the string 11 terminates at a knife edge on the cantilever arm 17 of the rail E and a rubber damper 40 thereon simulates the damping of the strings by a conventional wooden piano bridge. In a modification, the damper may be pressed on. to the top of the string with variable pressure to provide variable decay rates. A number of ceramic piezo-electric transducers 20 smaller than the number of strings is located within the rail separated by rubber dampers 26 from the cantilever arm 17. The static pressure on the transducers 20 is sufficient to prevent them coming loose even when the piano is played at full amplitude. The aluminium rail E may be replaced by one of soft iron and the piezoelectric transducer by magnet coil transducers.
