Abstract

691,337. Ratchet lifting jacks. AUTO SPECIALTIES MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 29, 1950. [Aug. 16, 1950] No. 31619/50. Class 78 (iii). A jack of the kind having a housing 16 which is raised or lowered on a racthet bar 32 by the alternate engagement and disengagement of a pair of pawls 42, 44, has a C-shaped lifting crutch 18 pivoted to the housing at 64. The crutch shown in Fig. 1 has an upturned lip 68 and an abutment 66 which engage a car bumper 70, and, since the crutch is free to pivot during operation of the jack this two point support is maintained throughout the lift. In a modification (not shown) the abutment 66 is replaced by an outstanding lip at the upper edge of the crutch. As shown in Fig. 5 the crutch may have a projection 114 which engages a hole 104 in a bumper 102, an abutment 112 being provided at the upper edge to further support the bumper. In another modification (not shown) the bumper is supported on a projection similar to 114 and the abutment 112 is dispensed with. In all the embodiments a spring may be provided to urge the lower edge of the crutch upwardly. The jack column 32 which is V-shaped in plan is supported in a hollow rectangular base 12. An operating lever 48 which is pivoted to the housing at 50 carries pawls 42, 44, and a guide roller 78, which co-operates with the apex of the column, is mounted in the lower part of the housing. A spring 46, when in the position shown, allows the pawls to lower the housing on operation of lever 48, but on being urged to the left by anticlockwise rotation of a lever 56 it causes subsequent operation of lever 48 to raise the housing.
