Abstract

Laminarin is extracted from seaweed with an acid, e.g. a mineral acid, at pH 1.5 to 6.5. For example, 50 parts by weight of dried, milled Laminarin clohstoni fronds are mixed with 500 parts of 0.05 N hydrochloric acid, 18 parts of N hydrochloric acid are added to bring the pH to 2.4 and the mixture is agitated for about 30 minutes. The laminarin produced may be converted into glucose by the method described in Group VI.ALSO:Laminarin is extracted from seaweed with an acid, e.g. a mineral acid, at pH 1.5 to 6.5. For example, 50 parts by weight of dried, milled Laminarin cloustoni fronds are mixed with 500 parts of 0.05 N hydrochloric acid, 18 parts of N. hydrochloric acid are added to bring the pH to 2.4 and the mixture is agitated for about 30 minutes. It may then be centrifuged and the centrifugate may be allowed to stand so that laminarin crystallizes out. More laminarin may be precipitated from the mother liquor by evaporating it and/or adding alcohol. The laminarin may be converted into glucose by acid hydrolysis, e.g. for one hour with 0.05 N hydrochloric acid in an autoclave at 135 DEG C., and the resulting glucose may be isolated, e.g. by crystallization.
