Abstract

Organic impurities in glutamic acid produced by alkaline hydrolysis of Steffen's filtrate are precipitated by admixing said glutamic acid with alkali lignin, or by subjecting to alkaline hydrolysis a mixture of Steffen's filtrate and alkali lignin. Alkali lignin includes lignin recovered from lignin-cellulose compositions, e.g. wood, bagasse and corn stalks, by digesting with dilute alkali solution to form alkali or alkaline earth metal derivatives and the lignin obtained therefrom by acidifying. It may be crude or partly purified. It does not include sulphate and sulphite lignins. The lignin may be dissolved in alkali hydroxide solution to give a resultant pH of about 9-11. The amount of lignin and the conditions of treatment are substantially those described in Specification 656,000 for tannin. Other clarifying agents such as diatomaceous clays may be used in addition.
