Abstract
690,635. Auxiliary air admission; silencing gaseous currents. STROUD, F. H. Aug. 30. 1950, No. 21427/50. Class 7 (ii). An extra-air admission device comprises an adjustably spring-loaded, suction-actuated piston 20 having a projection 21 normally closing an air inlet 13 and air-flow ports 22 in its front face, an adjustable tube 26 limiting the piston travel, and an adjustable rod 27 controlling ports 41 in the tube 26 through which the air flows to an outlet port 14 connected to the intake manifold. A screen 16 and an inlet silencer 17 containing steel wool are fitted over the air inlet aperture, and the piston 20 opens the inlet 13 at a predetermined intake manifold suction above idling suction to allow air to flow through the ports 22 and ports 40, 41, to the outlet 14. The loading of the piston 20 is adjusted by a screwed abutment 30 in which the tube 26 is screwed, the lock-nuts 33. 34, 35 for the adjustable members 30. 26. 27 being anodized different colours. The valve 20 is of brass and the remaining parts preferably of aluminium. The device is held in position on a nipple 42, screwed into the intake manifold and having a coned part 43 which is a friction fit in the outlet port 14, by a bracket comprising straps 45, 46 hooked together at 47 and tightened by a bolt 53, the part 45 fitting over the casing 10 and the part 46 being flattened at 49 to engage under the head of the nipple 42.
