Abstract

<PICT:0690330/III/1> A process for setting and drying an aqueous coating of a hydrophilic colloid on a support comprises gelling the colloid layer by cooling it and drying the gelled layer by means of a current of air at a temperature which would normally cause the coating to flow but at such a rate that it is dried sufficiently before its viscosity is reduced to the extent necessary for the layer to flow. In examples, the ranges of temperatures and drying times are given for coatings of gelatino silver halide emulsions upon cellulose acetate film or paper bases. After the colloid has first been gelled the support may be passed through an additional zone at a low temperature to obtain a firmer gel, and the coating may be further improved by passing the support after the first drying through a secondary drying and conditioning zones. A film 1 is taken from a reel over guide rolls 2 and 3 in a temperature-controlled chamber 4, the lower rolls 3 being mounted in a frame movable upwardly and downwardly, and is led from a coating unit 6 into a chilling tower 11. Cold air is admitted to the chilling tower 11 from a chamber 10 and is withdrawn through a chamber 12. The film is then taken through chambers 15 and 16 where warm air is impinged upon it from slots communicating with air ducts 17, 171 and 18, 181 in the chambers 15 and 16 respectively. From the chamber 16 the film passes through two further drying zones 21, 211, the former, 21, being supplied with warm air through slots from a duct 25. Finally the film is passed through a conditioning chamber 26 in which the temperature and humidity are controlled, and to a reeling device 30. Several of the lower rollers 29 in the conditioning chamber 26 may be given freedom of vertical movement. Glass plates may be coated on a moving belt with gelatino silver halide emulsion in the above manner.
