Abstract
755,151. Photographic films and papers. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. June 2, 1954 [Aug. 19, 1953], No. 16292/54. Class 98 (2). [Also in Group VIII] A process for coating a viscous aqueous composition on a continuous web comprises extruding the composition on to the web moving at a speed of at least 150 ft. per min. and 1 to 200 times faster than the speed of extrusion in the presence of water vapour or readily condensable vapours of an inert water-soluble liquid having a boiling point not greater than 212‹ F. while maintaining a pressure from 20 mm. to 190 mm. and a temperature of 75‹ to 150‹ F. As shown in the Figure, the web is guided by a roller 2 to contact the surface of a drum 4 passing over rollers 3, 5 to 9 to another part of the surface, where it passes between the drum and a guide 10 secured to the coating chamber 1. The composition is extruded from an orifice 18 connected to a chamber 17 and supply pipe 15. Openings 11 are provided for initially withdrawing air and a pipe 13 and nozzle 14 for introducing condensable vapour such as water vapour to the required low pressure. A heating element 19 or water jacket raises the temperature of the chamber. An inspection window 20 is provided. The coating may comprise aqueous, silver halide dispersions in natural and synthetic water permeable colloids such as gelatin albumin, agar agar, water-permeable polyamides, polyvinyl alcohol partially hydrolysed polyvinyl esters and hydrophilic polyvinyl acetals or aqueous ethanol solutions of polyvinyl acetal colour formers of the type described in Specification 598,477 or film bases carrying light sensitive silver salts dispersed in polyvinyl acetal colour formers containing primary carbonamide or sulphonamide. In one example described a cellulose acetate film base with a thin gelatin sub-coating on its upper surface is coated with a gelatino silver bromide emulsion. In another example paper with a baryta coating is coated with an aqueous gelatino silver bromide photographic emulsion in the absence of actinic light. In a further example, a cellulose acetate film base with a gelatin substratum is coated with an aqueous gelatin solution containing a water-soluble anti-halation dye such as 4: 4<SP>1</SP> - methenyl - bis - (1 - phenyl - 3- methyl-pyrazolone-5). The process is used for preparing multi-layer film elements, printing papers, double-coated X-ray films, motion picture and portrait films and papers. The coating may be a light filter layer, anti-halation and anti-abrasion layers and substratum layers from aqueous solutions.
