Abstract

690,049. Bookbinding. WOLK, W. June 15, 1950. No. 14932/50. Class 16. In a method for the application of adhesive to the side faces, and the portions of the usual gauze or linen backing strip previously glued thereon, of a block of assembled book sections, the said block is fed, back foremost, from above downwards, between oppositely driven glueing rollers and finally delivered on to a slideway in the form of a grating. Book blocks to which the usual gauze or linen strips have been applied are first guided between rollers 42, Fig. 2, whose surfaces are of sponge rubber rings correspon-, ding to the length of the strips, until they rest on stops 43, so that a preliminary coating of adhesive from a container 41 is applied to the sides of the strip. The blocks are then guided downwardly, backs downward, between rollers 1, 2, having serrated or pimpled brass or other metal surfaces and rotated in opposite directions by a drive from a pinion 25, the rollers being coupled by gears 32 mounted in an adjustable yoke 33. The distance between rollers 1, 2 and adhesive supply rollers 13, 14 rotating in containers 21 is adjustable by screws 19. Rollers ,2, 14 and their container 21 are mounted on extensions 5 of the machine frame, which are adjustable laterally by means of a rack 6 so as to alter the distance between rollers 1, 2 according to the thickness of the blocks. The containers are mounted on parallel links 22 so as to be able to be swung clear of the rollers for refilling. The roller 2 has a yieldable mounting, being carried on upper sections of the extensions 5 pivoted at 11 to lower sections thereof, and compression springs 12 being disposed between the sections. In another form, Fig 4, the preliminary gluing rollers 42 are mounted in separate containers 41, being movable apart by energizing electromagnets 53 to pull rods 52, and together by springs 54, the blocks being inserted to rest on the edges of the containers. As shown in Fig. 5, flat metal rods 44 may be provided as spreaders for the adhesive, being mounted between yokes 45 pivoted at 46, the spreaders being adjusted for the amount of adhesive to be transferred by nuts 49.
