SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,883, dated June 24, 1890.

To all whom it nuty concern.-

Be it known that I, THEODORE minus, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Dresden, Saxony, Germany, have invented a 5 new and useful Improvement in Machines for Ornamenting Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a machine for or [o namenting boxes, provided with means for simultaneously applying strips of paper or other material to the same, or vice versa.

Figures 1 and 2 represent vertical sections of a machine embodying my invention. Fig.

3 represents a rear view of a portion thereof. Fig. i represents a vertical section of portion of a trough for dampening or wetting the strips of gummed paper or material prior to attachment to boxes. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 represent sections of portions of the rollers employed on enlarged scales. Fig. 8 represents a perspective view of a detached portion on an enlarged scale. A designates the frame of the machine, and B designates the table thereof.

0 designates rollers, which are geared from the driving-shaft D, and have their periphcries slightly above the table B.

E designates a roller, which is mounted on the stock or arm F, the latter being connected with the transverse beam G of the frame A, said beam being grooved or slotted to receive the head of the bolt II, which head is fitted in the groove or slot of the beam G, so as to adapt the stock or arm F to be laterally adjusted, said head being afterward tightened by the nut H of the bolt.

The contours of the rollers C and E are ornamental, forms of which are shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 but the same may be varied as desired.

Connected with the stock F is a trough J,

paper or material fed to the boxes or pasteboard, said trough having a perforated partition K at one end, forming a receptacle and support for a piece of wick or other absorbent material, the upper end of which is presented to the passing strip, as will be seen in Fig. 4. To the stock F is also connected an arm L, on which is mounted the reel M, on which the gummed strip is wound or sup- 6o ported.

N designates a flange, which is secured to the table for guiding thework through the rollers, and P designates a device for binding the edges of boxes or pasteboard, as will be seen in Fig. 11, said device consisting of the base Q and top portion R, which is secured to one side of the base, leaving the throat S,

which narrows toward its discharge end. Adjacent to the discharge end is afoot T, which is secured by an elastic strip U to the inlet end of the portion R, said strip acting as a spring and serving to press the foot T against the base Q.

The operation is as follows: The strip of paper to be applied to a box, piece of pasteboard, &c., is primarily prepared with an adhesive back, which latter is dampened or moistened in its passage over the trough J or, if desired, said trough may contain gum or paste, which may be applied to the strip in any suitable manner. If it is desired to bind the edge of the box, pasteboard, &c., as

in Fig. 9, the strip is partly folded and inserted in the throat S, and said edge, &c., is placed between the folded strip and both fed forward, passing through the throat S, whereby itis fully folded and then partly pressed by the foot T, after which it passes between the rolls E and 0, whereby it is pressed firmly on the edge and causedto adhere thereto. hen

it is desired to apply a strip to the face of the box, pasteboard, &c., as in Figs. 12 and 13, the folding device P is removed, and the strip is laid on said face as the piece of the box, 5 pasteboard, &c., is fed along the table 13, the rollers pressing said strip firmly on the piece,

so that it adheres thereto. Simultaneously the ornamental faces of the rollers impart their contour to the piece, said faces being of the order of grooves, creases, beadings, moldings, (to, forms of which are shown in Figs.

12 and 13. In order to direct the strip true and uniform from the reel to the rollers I, employ aguide V, of curved, tubular, or channeled form, the guide receiving the strip from the reel and discharging it adjacent to the rollers, as shown in Fig. l.

The rollers O E may be removed and substituted by others, and the rollers E, in addition to being laterally adjustable may also be Vertically adjusted, for which purpose screws W are employed. The flange N is laterally adjustable 011 the table, and when properly located is secured thereto by a clampingbolt X. I show two slotted bars or beams G, and, as is evident, may use one or two rollers E, the roller adjacent to the guide V having a smooth face and serving to feed the strip to the other roller, the latter being the pressing and ornamenting roller; but it is evident that but a single rollerE will be sufficient for both feeding, ornamenting, and pressing. The gear-wheel Y, employed in part for driving the rollers, is mounted on a movable arm or hanger Z, having a segmental slot Z, whereby said Wheel may be removed and substituted by another of different pitch, so that the speed of the rollers may be varied as desired, said arm when adjusted being secured to the frame by a screw Z which passes through the slot Z into the frame, the axis of the wheel Y being also adjustable in the slot Y in the arm or hanger Z, the centers being preserved.

The rollers C may be long or narrow and interchangeable, in order to cover a greater or less surface, and may be fixed near the ends of their supports or adjacent to the cen- .ter thereof, according as the ornamentation of the material may be required at or near the center or near the edge, and consequently the roller E is made laterally adjustable to engage the said rollers O at whatever point they may be located.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

combination of the rollers O, the upper adj ustable roller E, and the device for binding theedges of the box, consisting of a base Q and top portion R, to form a throat, substantially as described.

V combination of the rollers O, the adjustable roller E, the arm L, supporting a reel M, a guide V, a binding or folding attachment, and a moistening attachment, substantially as described.

5. In a machine for ornamenting boxes, the combination of a table B, the rollers C, having ornamental grooves therein, an adjustable roller E, having grooves similar to the rollers O, the arm L, supporting a reel M, a guide V, a binding or folding attachment, a moistening attachment, and the gearing adjustable in a hanger Z, substantially as described.
