Abstract

Classes 94(i) and 94(ii) The production of a flexible airtight sealed package of oxygen-proof material includes the step of at least partially evacuating said package through an exhausting hole provided in said package in the vicinity of projections forming exhaust passages within the package. The air is evacuated from a filled package through a suction hole 9 formed in a wall of the package, one or both opposed walls of the package being formed with inwardly directed projections which serve to allow the air, but not any granular material, to pass easily from the interior of the package The walls of the package are sealed together around the suction hole when evacuation is complete. The package is formed from a blank 1 of flexible oxygen-proof material folded double and sealed along its side edges 4, 5 to form a pouch which is then filled and sealed along its remaining open edge 8. The projections may be formed on the blank 1 before folding or after forming the pouch or at any stage prior to the evacuation of the package and the hole formed in the blank or filled package. The projections may be in the form of a plurality of substantially hemispherical, conical or pyramidal protuberances, or of a plurality of ridges which may be in the form of parallel or radiating, straight, curved or zig-zag lines. A strip of material formed with projections may be inserted into the package beneath the site of the hole, the projections on the package walls in this case may or may not be present. The strip may form part of an inner wrapper; it may be sealable by heat and/or pressure to the inner surface of the package walls. Specification 666,799 is referred to.
