Abstract

689,537. Pneumatic discharge of hopper. SMIDTH & CO. AKTIESELSKAB, F. L. June 25, 1951. No. 15040/51. Class 78 (i). Material is fed into hopper 1 through inlet 2 and is discharged at the bottom by compressed air from pipe 7, the air entering at 38 to fill the top of the hopper and issuing as a jet at 46 to discharge the material. The air pressure is cut off before all the material is discharged, the remaining material being discharged by selfexpansion of the air in the hopper. The method of working is governed by arm 3 which, when the material piles up to a corresponding level, is displaced and, in turn, displaces lever 4 to lower the piston of valve 6. This permits compressed air from pipe 8 to flow to valve 10 and so to lower the piston of the latter. This permits air from pipe 8 to flow via pipe 13 to both pipes 14 and 15. The air in pipe 15 displaces valve 20 and thus maintains arm 3 in its displaced position after the material has sunk. The air in pipe 14 lowers piston 17 of cylinder 16. Piston 17, which actuates valves 25, 33, by the engagement of projections 23 with pivoted and spring-connected levers 24, 31, raises the piston of said valve 25 so as to break the connection through pipes 8, 28, 26 of air with cylinder 29 so that air valve 30 is closed. Piston 17 also lowers lever 18 and raises valve 19 to close inlet 2. The hopper is thus sealed. The fore-mentioned lowering of piston 17 also raises the piston of valve 33 and air flows from pipe 22 through pipe 34 to cylinder 36 so as to release valve 37 and to permit air to flow from pipe 7 into the hopper so as to discharge the latter. Before the material is completely discharged, the air resistance thereof falls so that the pressure of air in the system also falls. This releases valve 20 which allows arm 3 to fall. The air is consequentially cut off by cylinder 36 and the last portion of material is discharged by the self-expansion of the air inside the hopper.
