Abstract
689,193. Oil seals. FORSHAW, R. DUTTON-. May 3, 1951 [May 20, 1950], No. 12683/50. Class 122(v) In an oil seal comprising an annular sealing element of flexible material and having a resilient lip 3 urged into contact by a garter spring 10 with a member 4 to be sealed, the garter spring is held around the lip by engagement with a number of separately-formed circumferentially arranged shoes 8 lying against the lip 3 and carried by the sealing element. Two sealing elements each comprising a radial portion 1 and an integral inclined portion 2 are clamped back-to-back in a housing and hooked over the radial portion 1 and partially embedded therein are a number of wire springs 5 (Fig. 3) each having two parallel arms including a coil 5a and bent outwardly at their ends to provide pins 7 which engage holes in the sides of adjacent shoes 8. the springs being formed so that when in position they urge the shoes into contact with the lip 3. The garter spring 10 is threaded through holes 9 arranged in the shoes so that the central axis of the garter spring is approximately in the same plane as the sealing edge of the lip 3. A single sealing element may be clamped in a casing and the spring and shoe may be combined as a single unit of stiff brass strip having a curled portion to hold the garter spring. In a modification the shoes are supported, either directly or through intermediate springs, on the loops of an annular wire member partially embedded in a reinforced circumferential flange integral with the sealing element. The lip 3 may be of softer material than the remainder of the sealing element.
