Abstract
688,201. Heating viscous liquids. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. March 27, 1950 [Feb. 10, 1949], No. 3725/49] Class 64 (iii), [Also in Groups XXVI and XXVIII] In a method of heating a viscous liquid (e.g. fuel oil) by pumping it through a recuperative heat-exchanger, some of the heated liquid is pumped through a closed circuit to mix with cold fluid passing to the heatexchanger at a rate of flow such that due to the preheating of the cold liquid and consequential reduction of viscosity of the liquid passing through the heat exchanger, the total pumping energy required is substantially less than that which would be required to pump the liquid through the heat-exchanger without such preheating. In the apparatus shown for carrying out the method, fuel oil is forced by a primary pump 2 through a duct 3 and a recuperative heatexchanger 1, some of the oil being returned from the outlet to the inlet of the heat-exchanger by a circulating pump 4 arranged in a duct 5 parallel with the duct 3. An auxiliary heater 8 may be provided in the duct 5 for additionally heating the oil when starting up and a mixer 9 may be included at the point where the circulating flow re-enters the main flow. If the pump 4 is a centrifugal pump, a by-pass 6 is provided having a pressure operated valve 7, a non-return valve 7a being incorporated in the duct 5.
