Abstract
688,096. Gasifying solid carbonaceous materials. PITTSBURGH CONSOLIDATION COAL CO. June 1, 1951 [June 23, 1950], No. 13052/51. Class 55 (i). In a fluidized process for gasifying solid carbonaceous materials such as coke, coal, oil shale and lignite by means of steam and a gas containing oxygen, particulate carbonaceous solids are fed upwardly by a worm gear type stoker 17 through an annular zone 19 between an outer vessel 10 and an inner vessel 20 to overflow into a fluidized gasification zone in the vessel 20, the gaseous products being withdrawn downwardly through the annular zone 19 to an outlet pipe 30 thereby to preheat the solids fed to the gasification and to remove entrained fine solids. Steam and oxygen are fed through the line 26 to the gasification zone which is maintained at a temperature of 1800-2000‹F and a pressure of 20 atmospheres ; ash is withdrawn through a line 32. In a modification the preheating and fluidized zones may be in separate vessels in side by side relationship, the carbonaceous solids being fed upwardly through one vessel and overflowing into the other and the withdrawn gases passing downwardly through the upwardly fed carbonaceous solids.
