Abstract
Spent active carbon is reactivated by thoroughly mixing it with a granular inert material so that it becomes coated thereon and heating the resultant mixture with agitation in the pressence of oxygen to a temperature, e.g. 350-550 DEG C, at which the impurities are burnt. Pitch coke or petroleum coke of size +10 to -100 mesh is damped with water and mixed with 6-10 per cent spent carbon. After heating for 6-20 mins. the coke and carbon are agitated with water and the resulting slurry passed through a 100 mesh screen, which retains the coke for re-use, while passing the water and carbon, which are separated by sedimentation or filtration. The coke and carbon may alternatively be separated by decantation or gravity means. Specification 684,036 is referred to.
