Abstract

Saturated organic compounds, especially hydrocarbons, are chlorinated by irradiating a mixture of chlorine and the organic compound with light originating from another chlorination reaction, e.g. the reaction of hydrogen or finely-divided metals with chlorine. The two reactions may be carried out in the same vessel, or in separate vessels, e.g. concentric quartz tubes. A water jacket may separate the two vessels to prevent transfer of heat, or coloured filters may be interposed to modify the light radiation. Carbon tetrachloride and chloroform are obtained by reacting methane with chlorine under the influence of light from a chlorine-hydrogen flame.ALSO:Saturated organic compounds, especially hydrocabons, are chlorinated by irradiaing a mixture of chlorine and the organic compound with light originating from another chlorination reaction, e.g. the reaction of hydrogen or finely divided metals with chlorine.
