Abstract

Naphthols substituted by one or more alkyl groups of more than two carbon atoms are made by reacting a - or b -naphthol with an olefine or alkyl halide in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst or with an alcohol and sulphuric acid. Thus, hexyl-heptyl-2-naphthol is obtained by reacting b -naphthol with a mixture of isohexylene, isoheptylene and boron fluoride. Specified reactants are propylene, butylene, amylene, hexylene, heptylene and dodecylene.ALSO:Metal-free dyestuffs are obtained by coupling diazo, diazoazo and tetrazo compounds (free from hydroxyl and other hydrophilic groups) with naphthols having at least one alkyl substituent of more than two carbon atoms. In the examples there is used as coupling component a hexyl-heptyl-2-naphthol obtained by reacting b -naphthol with a mixture of isohexylene and isoheptylene; the diazo components used are 2-methoxyaniline, cresidine, 2 : 5-dimethoxyaniline, 4-aminoazobenzene, a -naphthylamine, benzidine, o-dianisidine, m-tolidine and 4 : 41-diaminodiphenylmethane. Also mentioned is the disazo dyestuff from tetrazotized o-dianisidine, 1 mol. of the above coupling component and 1 mol. of p-tert.-butyl-phenol. The couplings may be carried out in the presence of pyridine. Other suitable components are mentioned.
