687,854. Change-speed gear. CHURCHILLREDMAN, Ltd., and DODGSON, F. March 15, 1951 [Dec. 15, 1949], No. 32164/49. Class 80 (ii). Thirty or more ratios are transmitted from an input shaft a to a parallel output shaft c, such as a feed shaft on an automatic lathe, by three countershafts f, h, i (shown out of position), the first, f, of which, itself driven at three ratios by a sliding gear-cluster a', a', a' splined on the input shaft, drives at each of five different ratios, the second and third countershafts h, i, which have different centre - distances, and during drive are geared together and to the final output shaft c by rigidly and slidably keyed wheels h<SP>6</SP>,i<SP>6</SP>, j. The input cluster a', a<SP>2</SP>, a', moved selectively by an individual threeposition rotary dial, drives the first countershaft f through wheels b', b<SP>2</SP>, b' on a sleeve b, free on the output shaft c, and carrying a fast wheel b', meshing, through an idler on the shaft h, with a fast wheel e on the countershaft f. The latter carries a splined cluster f<SP>1</SP>, f<SP>2</SP>, f<SP>3</SP>, selectively movable axially, by an independent rotary dial into ten positions, in five of which it drives the countershaft h at five ratios by meshing wheel f<SP>1</SP> with fast wheels h, or h<SP>1</SP>; f<SP>2</SP> with h<SP>3</SP> or h<SP>4</SP> ; and f<SP>3</SP> with h<SP>5</SP>, whilst in the other five positions it drives the countershaft i at five further ratios by meshing the wheel f<SP>1</SP> with fast wheels i' or i<SP>2</SP>; f<SP>2</SP> with i<SP>3</SP>; and f<SP>3</SP> with i<SP>4</SP> or i'. The numbers of teeth on the adjacent wheels h', h<SP>2</SP>; h<SP>3</SP>, h'; i<SP>1</SP>, i<SP>2</SP> ; and i<SP>4</SP>, i<SP>5</SP> are unequal, their tooth-profiles being suitably modified to enable them to mesh with their single co-operating wheels, e.g. f' &c., on the respective parallel shafts. To prevent locking due to simultaneous meshing of two ratios during a shift of the ten-position gear-cluster f', f<SP>2</SP>, f<SP>3</SP>, its selector dial is locked in gear-positions by a fixed peg from which it must be disengaged by a lifting movement before it can be turned, such movement acting through a lever linkage to slide the splined wheel i<SP>6</SP> out of mesh with h<SP>6</SP>, thereby breaking the connection between the countershafts. The output shaft c may drive a lead-screw shaft j<SP>2</SP> through an axially-engageable wheel pair h free on the input shaft a.
