Abstract

In the production of an alloy having as predominant p constituents Si and Al, a charge comprising the oxides of these elements in admixture with carbon as a reducing agent is introduced into an electric furnace and smelted therein, the charge containing 8-25 per cent of Al2O3 and 6-20 per cent of oxide of Fe or Ni. The amount of carbon used should preferably be at least 80 per cent. of that theoretically necessary for complete reduction of all oxides in the charge. The charge may consist essentially of graphitic shale, the graphite content of which then constitutes at least a part of the reducing agent. At least one of the furnace electrodes may be formed of an iron tube containing a mixture of 10-75 per cent graphitic shale, electrode carbon and a bituminous binder, the shale containing 15-30 per cent of naturally occuring graphite. The production of an alloy containing 61.1 per cent Si 13.2 per cent Al and 24.6 per cent Fe is referred to.
