Abstract

687,309. Extracting studs from shafts. LA BOUR CO., Inc. Nov. 29, 1950 [Oct. 9, 1950], No. 29299/50. Class 61 (iii). [Also in Group XXIV] The shaft 5 of a rotary impeller 6' is integral with a stud 7 fitting into a co-operating socket in a driving shaft 2, the assembly being mounted in ball-bearings in a housing 35. The two shafts 5, 2 are connected by a Woodruff key 16 engaging a keyway in the wall of the socket and by a screwed pin 23 in a transverse bore in the stud 7 engaging the shoulder of a hole 27. The pin 23 is of such a length that it may be withdrawn completely into the transverse bore. When separating the two shafts, the pin 23 is withdrawn into the transverse bore by means of a wrench inserted through a hole 34 in the housing 35 engaging a hexagonal socket in one of its ends. A drift 32 is then inserted through the hole 34 and through one of two holes 30 in the socket, offset by 90 degrees from the hole 27 and removed axially therefrom, the wedging action of the tool urging the stud 7 axially out of the socket. The drift 32 is' provided with longitudinal bars 33 which engage with the wall of the housing 35 when the limit of travel has been reached, so that unnecessary pounding of the drift may be avoided.
