Abstract

687,285. Mixing liquids in proportionate Quantities. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 17, 1951 [Feb. 17, 1950], No. 4152/50. Class 86 [Also in Group XXVIII] A liquid to be admixed proportionately with a liquid flowing in a conduit is injected into the conduit by means of a positive displacement pump controlled in response to the displacement of a spring controlled gate acting as a flow responsive device in the conduit. In Fig. 1 the displacement of a gate 11 by the flow of liquid through the conduit 6 rotates a disc 13 around which is wrapped a flexible pull member 14 tensioned by a spring 16, the movements of the gate 11 thereby being transmitted to a lever 15 which forms part of a lost motion control mechanism by which means the cam 2 imparts to the diaphragm pump 1, a stroke of variable length. The added liquid enters the conduit 6 through a nozzle 8 downstream of the gate 11. The disc 13 could be replaced by a cam when required by the law of the flow responsive device and pump control mechanism. An indicator lamp 17 may be energized when the control lever 15 is displaced from its non-pumping position and a lamp 19 may be energized by a pressure differential device 20 to show whether liquid is actually being pumped. In Fig. 2, (not shown), the displacement of the member 14 rotates a sleeve valve arrangement which governs the effective pumping stroke of a pair of plungers of a variable displacement plunger pump. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, (not shown), the member 14 actuates a speed controller of an electric or fluid operated motor driving a constant displacement pump.
