Abstract

687,121. Seaming non-metallic sheets. TRIGGS, W. W. (Wingfoot Corporation). Nov. 28, 1950. No. 29121/50. Class 42 (i). [Also in Group XVII] A heat-sealable tear tape 1 is applied to thermoplastic heat-sealable film 2 by superimposing the tape and film and bonding them by heat and pressure applied to the film on the side remote from the tape, in amounts sufficient to weaken the film at the bonded area as shown in Fig. 2. The film 2, with the tape 1 beneath it, may be passed between rollers 5, and over a rubber-covered roll 4, a heated metal roller 3, having an edge of less width than the tape, being pressed against the upper surface of the film. The roller 3 is supported in a yoke 8, heated by an electrical element 12, and secured to a rod 10, which is supported in the frame of the machine ; it may be lifted periodically from the film 2, to form gaps 15 in the bonding, by a cam 16, which may be fixed on the shaft of the roller 4, or be driven independently thereof, and acts on a follower 17 and arm 18. The heated roller may have a channelled edge. to produce a double seal.
