687,040. Continuous-casting machines; casting processes. JUNGHANS, S. Feb. 27, 1951 [June 2, 1949; Sept. 17, 1949], No. 4755/51. Class 83 (i). In the continuous casting of metal in a bottomless highly-cooled mould 2, the emerging metal with its periphery solid is cooled so slowly that pipes and segregations are not formed. This may bE effected by passing the emerging metal S' through an equalizing chamber 3 which may have guide rollers 8 and be subdivided, the different zones being at different temperatures or filled with different gases, e.g. air, steam, nitrogen. The fluid column S<SP>2</SP> must be so long that the fluid pressure reduces or eliminates the undesired formations. In the case of a steel bar 100 mm. in diameter a length of fluid column of 2400 mm. gave a pressure at the tip S' of 1.7 atmospheres. The bar leaves the mould at a surface temperature of 1350‹ C., the temperature of the gas in the chamber 3 is kept at 600‹ C. and the bar leaves the chamber with a surface temperature of 1150‹ C. To avoid internal cracking the rollers 5, 6 which control the rate of descent of the bar, should engage it at a point below the tip S<SP>4</SP>. Cooling sprays 10 may be used if required.
