686,924. Spectacle frames. CROOKES OPTICAL WORKS, Ltd., and HILLMAN, D. C. S. Nov. 19, 1951 [Sept. 14, 1950], No. 22658/50. Class 97 (i). A spectacle frame having a holder for an additional lens segment pivotally mounted on the frame so that the additional segment is capable of lying alongside a side arm or adjacent a fixed lens to form a bifocal lens system is characterised in that the holder for the lens segment is pivoted for movement about two axes, one parallel or substantially parallel to the side arm hinge axis and the other at right angles or substantially at right angles thereto. As shown, the holder 24 of the lens segment is carried by an arm 22 connected by a ball 21 and socket to a lug 20 on a bar 19 pivoted to a pin 13 to which are pivoted the plates 16 and 17 of the hinge connecting the temple arm 10 to the lens frame 12. By means of the ball and socket connection the holder 24 may be rotated through 180 degrees about a horizontal axis from the position shown in Fig. 2, and, by rotation of the bar 19 about the axis of the pin 13, be located in a suitably shaped recess in the side arm, which is preferably of the " library " type. A pin connection may be used instead of the ball and socket, and the bar 19 may be separately hinged to the side arm 10 or the side arm hinge plate 16.
