Abstract
A grained effect is produced on a painted surface by applying a coat of scumble to a dried undercoating, covering the coating before it is set with protective sheet material except at selected areas thereof, <PICT:0686415/III/1> applying a material which has been rendered, or is, paint-absorbent to the outside of the protective sheet so as to removed the unprotected areas of wet scumbling and then removing the protective sheet. Referring to the drawings, scumbled surface A while still wet has applied thereto stencil sheet B of sized paper which may be coated with sand on the contact surface, which is then wiped over with absorbent pad D which has been wetted with a paint solvent, or with a felt covered roller, so removing the scumble from the openings C. Alternatively a sheet of absorbent material such as paper mach<\>e having embossed areas supplementary to openings C may be pressed on top of the stencil so as to absorb the scumble.
