Abstract
A coloured band having one edge region of graduated intensity is applied to a substrate sheet by electrostatically spraying the coating material at an oblique angle onto the sheet over the edge of a grounded shield spaced above the surface of the sheet. Located between the shield and the sheet is a manifold which blows air towards the edge of the shield to give a graduated edge to the land below the edge of the shield. Bands may be applied to glass sheets or to plastics interlayers to be subsequently located between glass sheets. A suitable spray compsn. is a mixt. of an organic dye, a solvent, and a binder such as polyvinyl butynol (at 0.02-0.2 wt.%). Aband having a smooth textured graduated edge is formed. The invention is of particular use in applying bands to car windscreens.
