Abstract

686,410. Drilling. VICTOR PRODUCTS (WALLSEND), Ltd. April 4, 1951 [April 26, 1950], No. 10311/50. Class 83 (iii). Rotary rock-drilling apparatus comprises a rack feed-bar 6 supported between a prop 2 and the rock face and a drill housing 5 fed along the feed-bar by a pinion 26 which is driven by an air or electric motor through double planet gearing 16 and an adjustable slipping clutch 28, 32. The motor may be the same motor as that for driving the drill spindle 23 and is connected by a worm 24 on the spindle to a worm-wheel 25 attached to the inner cone member 28 of the clutch. The outer clutch member 32 is secured to a spindle 31 which, at one end, is engaged with a hand nut 38 for moving the spindle 31 to adjust the amount of slip of the clutch or to disengage it and, at the other end, has the pinion 26 and also a squared end 46 for a handle 47 by which the drill housing can be manually retracted along the feed-bar when the clutch is disconnected. The nut 38 is frictionally engaged with a thrust-plate 40 on a squared portion of the spindle 31 so that it rotates with it and is not affected by any difference in the speed between the two clutch members. The drill housing and feed-bar are carried on the adjustable prop 2 by a mounting 1 providing angular adjustment in both the horizontal and vertical planes, as described in Specifications 681,189 and 686,409.
