In a laundry ironing machine in which articles are fed to the machine in succession by one or more operators, means G is operated by the passage of the articles, for controlliug the operation of a clock device so that the device is rendered operative only either when no article is passing a given point or when an article is passing the point. The means G consists of an electric contact which is insulated from the frame of the machine and which is raised out of contact with a metal plate E when articles are fed from the delivery side of a machine of the type having a plurality of rollers each rotating in a concave bed. A plurality of contacts, one for each operator and a similar number of clocks J<SP>1</SP>,J<SP>5</SP> may be provided. Each contact G is mounted by means of an insulated bush on a bar F and each is either connected in series with a clock and with an electric supply so that the clock runs when the contact between G and the plate E is made or a relay is used in the circuit so that the clock runs when contact is not made, hence the clock indicates the time during a given period, which may be recorded by a clock J arranged to run continuously for the period, when the machine is not effectively used or the reverse by the particular operator. A photo-electric cell may be used instead of a movable contact.
