Abstract
685,894. Roll grinding or polishing. FARREL-BIRMINGHAM CO., Inc. Feb. 22, 1951 [June 28, 1950], No. 4318/51. Class 60. A roll grinding or polishing device comprises a pair of frames adapted to be positioned one at each side of the bite between a pair of co-operating rolls, and one or more grinding or polishing stones mounted in one or both of said frames for adjustment about an axis substantially parallel to that of the associated roll. For grinding or polishing the co-operating rolls 10, 11 of a calender the device comprises a pair of supporting frames 15, 16 connected by a rod 17 having a relatively flat central portion 18 disposed between the rolls. Each frame is hollow and has an opening 19 at its forward end to receive a sleeve 20 rotatably mounted on the rod 17; the inner end of the sleeve is threaded at 21 to receive a nose block 22 of low friction material which is set against the surface of the rolls to steady the supporting frame. The rear end of sleeve 20 has an enlarged portion 23 the forward face of which bears against shoulders 24 provided in the frame, while the rear end of the enlarged portion 23 bears against cap 25 secured to the frame by bolts 26, so that the sleeve is held against longitudinal movement but can be rotated, so as to adjust the nose blocks 22 on the threads 21, by a tool inserted into one or other of openings 28 in the portion 23, the frame having an opening 27 to permit access. A set screw 30 threaded into the cap 25 engages a longitudinal slot 32 in the rod to prevent rotation of the rod relative to the frame; a nut 33 threaded on the end of the rod 17 bears against the cap 25 so as to adjust the frame, together with the sleeve 20 and nose block 22, relatively to the rolls. Each frame has a pair of arcuate seats 35, one at the upper side and the other at the lower side, the seats having at their intermediate portions depressed guideways 36 slidably receiving a projecting rib 37 on the rear face of a holder 38 of one of the grinding or polishing stones 39; the stone is secured in a recess 40 in the holder by a set screw 41 bearing against a clamping plate 42. The centres about which the seats 35 are described are substantially at the centre of the stones 39. The holders 38 are secured in adjusted position by clamping bolts 44 extending through the walls of the frame and provided with nuts. As shown, one frame 15 carries grinding stones 39, while the other frame 16 carries steadying blocks 50 of low friction material; only one stone may be used, or stones may be employed in both frames.
