Abstract
685,790. Holding and picking-up tools. LORD, A., and WRIGHT, J. L. May 28, 1951 [July 18, 1950; Sept. 29, 1950], Nos. 17927/50 and 23891/50. Class 61 (ii). [Also in Group XXX] An implement intended particularly for carrying a bale of hay, straw or like packaged material comprises a pointed shank 1 provided with a handle 3 and pivoted fingers 8, 9. The appliance is forced into the bale and at a suitable depth the fingers are extended, Fig. 2, to form a barb which prevents withdrawal when the handle is lifted. The appliance is detached by retracting the fingers and pulling it upwards. The hollow shank 1 is formed with slots 6, 7 near its point 2 through which the fingers 8, 9 can pass. These fingers are mounted loosely on a pin 10 which is carried by the shank and passes through slots 16, 17 in a cylindrical member 11. This member can slide in the shank and has slots 13, 14 for the passage of the fingers 8, 9. A sleeve 18 provided with a flange 19 is mounted slidably on the shank and carries a pin 20 which passes through a slot 22 in the shank and is screwed into the member 11. The sleeve 18 is urged downwards by a compression spring 23 which bears against the flange 19 and the bolt 4 securing the handle 3. A locking lever 21 mounted on the bolt 4 and acted on by a spring 24 is formed with an aperture 27 to receive the pin 20. When the appliance is forced into the bale, the collar 18 is moved upwards and a pin 15 mounted near the lower end of the member 11 bears against the undersurfaces of the fingers 8, 9 and forces them outwards. When pressure is exerted on the part 25 of the lever 21, the pin 20 is released and the fingers retracted as soon as an upward pull is exerted on the appliance.
